Popular Holiday Looks Inspired by Rihanna
Published May 3, 2017
Much more than just a talented hitmaker, Rihanna is also a fashion icon. This style chameleon has worn it all, from funky street clothes to fancy dresses from the biggest designers. Now that the holiday season is upon us, you likely have a lot of parties, get-togethers, and other seasonal social events on your calendar. Not sure what to wear? Try these great holiday looks inspired by our girl, Riri.
Combine patterns fearlessly
Rihanna didn’t blink an eye when she wore leopard trousers with a sleeveless navy pinstripe shirt in New York. She even accessorized with a patterned Louis Vuitton bag and demure off-white pumps. If you decide to wear patterns that otherwise clash this holiday season, follow in Riri’s footsteps and go with tame shoes that don’t distract from your outfit. Keep your makeup natural, too.
Don’t diss the shirt dress
Shirt dresses are in for a reason. You can dress these up or down depending on the look of the shirt dress and your accessories. At the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, Rihanna rocked a brown shiny shirt dress with plenty of shape: its puffy shoulders and asymmetrical cut kept it from looking lazy. With her short haircut, simple shimmery jewelry, and matching brown and gold pumps, she looked professional but ready to have fun.
Watch the cleavage
If you’re attending a holiday work party, cleavage isn’t exactly appropriate. However, you’re in love with the low-cut kimono dress you just bought. How about a compromise? Make like Riri did when dining in California and wear a neck-grazing shirt beneath the dress. Her pink floral kimono dress had enough black detailing that the black shirt underneath matched well.
A cute coat makes all the difference
Forget about a dress when you can have a coat like Rihanna’s. At last year’s Paris Fashion Week, Riri strutted her stuff at a Christian Dior show in the designer’s oversized coat dress with short sleeves and large pockets. With an included leopard wrap around the neck, Rihanna was definitely cozy. She bravely accentuated the bubblegum pink coat dress with black leather thigh-high boots.
Heels aren’t always required
When wearing a nice dress, you practically have to wear heels with it, especially to a formal event, right? Rihanna says otherwise. In New York this May, she combined a gorgeous strappy white floral dress with chunky platforms. The key is in the color matching: the pink in the sneakers was the same pink in the flowers on the dress, so this getup looked polished.
