When tapping into the perceptions of overall LGBTQIA+ representation in the mainstream hair & beauty industries, a majority of **Gen Z** and **Baby Boomers** said they only felt *Somewhat Represented*, with **32%** of their **86** votes going to that category. On the other hand, **Millennials** and **Gen X** said they feel *Very Represented*, with a **36%** majority vote of the **212** individuals asked. So, you might be asking:

The research suggests that the **youngest** and **oldest** generations feel the least represented, as opposed to the ones sandwiched between them. Why is that? Do you feel the same way? Maybe it’s related to things like the sudden boom of new tech, more regulated labor laws, or the overall expansion of the beauty and hair industries themselves, but it’s hard to say that it’s due to one individual aspect in particular.

First, let’s clear some things up.

Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD, or autism is a developmental disorder that can affect communication & behavior and can begin to show in children before the age of three. It's called a *spectrum* because there's a wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience, which is often misconstrued. Although ASD is present from birth and usually diagnosed in early childhood, sometimes diagnoses are made later in life.

While the effects of ASD are different for everyone, there are numerous things, big and small, you can look for in your child’s barbershop or salon that help make them more inviting for individuals with autism. Here are some helpful tips you can use for finding those hairstylists or barbers, as well as some pre-haircut tricks to try, all from parents and loved ones of those who are on the spectrum.

## What to Look for in Barbers & Hairstylists

**Silent Appointments or Quiet Clipper Options:** As you probably know, individuals on the spectrum can be especially sensitive near the ears due to auditory sensory overstimulation or discomfort. By going to a barbershop or salon that has options for quieter clippers or tools, you can ensure your child remains as comfortable as possible and help prevent any sudden motions or surprises that might otherwise ruin the haircut or service being provided. You can even consider looking for something called a *silent appointment*, where chit-chat and conversations with the client are kept to a minimum alongside the use of quiet tools.

**Get Your Child Involved:** Ask the barber or hairstylist if your child can get involved with their haircut! Doing so can help ease anxious thoughts or worries and shows that what the professional is doing is *safe*. The type of involvement is completely up to you (and the professional, of course!) but can look like allowing the child to turn the clippers on, try on different bibs, or even smell the different products that’ll be used. All of this, of course, is contingent upon what the child and/or barber or hairstylist is personally comfortable doing and will absolutely vary from person to person. So, find what works for you and your child! At the end of the day, you want to look for an environment where the professional is doing the service *with* your child, not *to* them. 

Michael Deallfordii, Vagaro’s Customer Loyalty and Engagement manager—and more importantly, father to a child who is on the spectrum—recalls how his son’s barber had grown his own hair out so that he could cut it alongside Michael’s son during his appointment to show him that it was okay. You could let them watch their favorite movie or TV show (given the shop has a TV or streaming device), or even bring things like coloring books for them to work on. We’ve even heard of hairstylists offering water play during a haircut with a cup or small bucket. All of this can help keep the child focused on something other than the haircut itself and allows the professional to be as efficient as possible during the cut. 

On top of fun visual elements, you could collaborate with the barbershop or salon to incentivize your child with treats, toys, or even something as simple as a sticker! Ultimately, you’re allowing haircuts to be an experience your child *can look forward to*, rather than something to fear. Mike mentions how his son loves mac ’n’ cheese, so his barber will sometimes give him a coupon for a local restaurant that serves it after a fresh cut. Now that is awesome.

**Make Sure the Stylist is Comfortable with Pivoting:** When providing a haircut to a child or someone on the spectrum, it’s paramount that, above all, the hair professional keeps an open mind and remains flexible in the face of any potential obstacles. By doing so, they’re creating an environment that your child feels welcome in and would want to return to. Some stylists will even get up and follow their client around the space if it’s difficult for them to sit still, cut hair at a sink as they partake in water play, or simply taking breaks as needed. Your stylist or barber’s ability to adapt and think on their feet can be the difference between a successful haircut, needing to go back for another service, or finding a new barbershop or salon altogether.

Facials to Try in 2023 

The beauty industry is notoriously known for its less-than-honest marketing claims. In a study conducted by the Journal of Global Fashion Marketing, researchers discovered that 82% of claims made by beauty companies are false. Today, consumers are more conscious about what they purchase, whether it’s the food they eat or the beauty products they use daily. As a result, there has been a surge in companies claiming that their products are natural or clean, touting them as safer to use than products containing synthetic materials. 

But clean or natural makeup doesn’t necessarily mean the product is safer and is often used as a buzzword by companies as a marketing ploy. Not all clean makeup is safe and not all synthetic makeup is toxic. So, what do these labels mean, and how can we, as consumers, know which products are best to use? 


### What is clean makeup?

There is no universal definition of clean makeup. Typically, companies use the terms clean and natural interchangeably, leading consumers to assume these labels indicate a product is safe to use and generally superior to synthetic counterparts. This is also referred to as “greenwashing.” Because of a lack of regulation in the industry, clean makeup ingredient lists can include things as benign as tea tree oil, as questionable as shark liver oil or as toxic as mercury, as all of these ingredients are derived from natural sources. Just because something has “natural” on its label doesn’t mean it’s safe to use. For instance, oregano is natural but known to cause blistering when used as a topical skin treatment.

A lack of regulation also means that a product does not need a certain percentage of natural ingredients. A product may advertise itself as clean but may only have a handful of safe, naturally derived ingredients, with the rest being harmful but technically natural, like petroleum. But who would want to put fossil fuels on their face? 

Often, clean makeup is assumed to be more eco-friendly. However, the practices to create this type of makeup can often be unsustainable due to the extraction process. Further, some color pigments in natural products may contain higher levels of heavy metals or contaminants when compared to synthetic products because it’s more difficult to standardize a natural product than standardizing a synthetic one. 

All that considered, there are companies making strides to make clean makeup actually clean. The founder of ILIA Beauty realized that we essentially eat any products on our lips. So, she decided to create a lip balm that is safe to ingest, which then gave way to a company whose goal is to create a forthright makeup brand. Synthetic products tend to have less of an environmental impact, a longer shelf life thanks to preservatives and are cheaper to buy & produce. They’re also easier to standardize because they are artificial and created by scientists in a controlled setting. While some synthetic ingredients can be harmful, this is not indicative of all synthetic products and doesn’t negate their benefits. 

### Which is better to use: clean or synthetic makeup?

## How It Works



Hair is constructed from a strong protein called **keratin**. Keratin contains **sulfides**, which, when they bond together, create a **disulfide bond** (**chemical side bond**), which is responsible for the wave patterns and curls in a person’s hair structure. Therefore, the curliness of your hair and its curl/wave pattern is determined by the number of its disulfide bonds. Disulfide bonds can't be broken by water or heat. In contrast, **physical side bonds** (such as hydrogen and salt,) can be broken by water and heat. Thus, the main difference between **heat straightening** and **chemical straightening** is which kinds of side bonds you break.

## Heat Straightening



The easiest, least-permanent hair straightening system is **heat straightening**. This can be achieved with a blow dryer and/or flat iron. Here, the physical side bonds (hydrogen and salt) are broken when the hair is washed (salt), dried, and flat-ironed (hydrogen.)

**Chemical straighteners** (sometimes called **perms** or **relaxers**) use chemicals different from the hair’s rebonding counterparts to change the curl/wave pattern of hair. This straightening system doesn’t fully straighten the hair, but rather softens and loosens the curl pattern. To achieve a fully straight look, additional **heat styling** is often required. As mentioned earlier, **keratin** is a naturally-occurring protein found in hair. Here, there is a slight distinction between a **keratin treatment** and a **keratin straightening service** (**Brazilian Blowout**.) In a **keratin straightening service** (Brazilian), a clarifying treatment opens the cuticle. Next, keratin is applied to the activated cuticle. Finally, the shape of the hair is set with a flat iron, sealing keratin into the hair shaft. It's important to note that in this service, formaldehyde is often a main ingredient. Proper ventilation is required, and the service must be performed in a salon setting.
