## A History of Hair: How the Her Secret Hair Story Began

Helen was only 11 years old when she started experiencing the side effects of alopecia areata, a form of hair loss that causes sudden circular bald patches to form on someone’s head. It wasn’t until a neighborhood maternal figure and long-term cosmetologist, *Granny*, sat down with Helen and explained what alopecia was that Helen was finally able to experience some peace, and brace for the journey ahead. During a conversation with her mother soon after, Helen learned her family had a history of hair loss, which helped kindle the passion that was beginning to grow in Helen’s soul for hair restoration.

We headed down to Jack & the Wolfe in Lymington to meet J Ralphs—a seasoned stylist turned salon manager—to find out exactly what it takes to balance business with a passion for hairdressing. 

### Hi, J! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the hairdressing industry? 
Hello! I started my career as a hairdresser and then transitioned into a salon manager later in life when the opportunity to work at Jack & the Wolfe presented itself. I grew up in a small town in New Forest, England, and as a child, I remember having a hard time at school because I didn’t quite fit in. When I was around 16, I decided to take on a Saturday job at a local hair salon to start earning some money while I was still at school. At the time, I didn’t have any prior interest in hairdressing, but as time went on, I really started to enjoy working in a salon environment. The people I worked with were so friendly, creative, artistic and vibrant, which inspired me to pursue a career in hairdressing. I felt like I had found my tribe and unleashed a creative passion that I didn’t even know existed. So, when I was offered the opportunity to train as a hairdressing apprentice, I jumped at the opportunity and haven’t looked back ever since.

### That’s great to hear! So, how did you become a salon manager at Jack & the Wolfe? 
I took a long career break from hairdressing to care for my grandma who was unwell at the time. She sadly passed away and I felt a bit lost, like I didn’t quite know what to do next. I was then approached by a friend of mine who was the manager of a luxury hotel and asked me if I would be interested in taking on some casual work. She asked if I could cover someone else’s shift for three weeks, so I agreed because it gave me a reason to get out of the house and dip my toes back into the working world. A few weeks later, I was offered a permanent position and ended up working my way up to hotel management. After working in hotel management for a couple of years, I started to miss hairdressing and working in a salon. It was around this time that I came across a job advert for Jack & the Wolfe who were looking for a salon manager with experience in hospitality. Without second-guessing myself, I applied for the role since working at Jack & the Wolfe was very much my idea of a dream job. After I applied, I was invited for an interview with Jack & Lydia, and I was offered the job out of the 120 people who applied! 
 
### That is such an incredible achievement! So, talk us through a day in the life of being a salon manager at Jack & the Wolfe. 
In the mornings, I am the first one to arrive and I make sure the salon is set up for the busy day ahead. I then move onto morning admin, so checking over emails, appointments and briefing our receptionist on things to follow up with when she starts her shift. One thing that I love doing each day is checking in with the staff when they arrive to ensure they are in the right headspace and have everything they need from me. Throughout the day, I work the room—kind of like I’m hosting a party—and I like to check in on our customers and the stylists to make sure everyone is well taken care of. If something isn’t going to plan, I am the first one to step in to offer solutions and quickly turn things around. At the end of the day, I am also the last person to leave and close the salon. 

### Why should a salon manager set the standard when it comes to delivering excellent customer service? 
As the salon manager, the overall customer experience is something that I take great pride in. I actively work hard to ensure that our customers feel good upon arrival and even better as they leave. Since the staff at Jack & the Wolfe work different shift patterns, I like to see myself as a constant presence that customers can count on, no matter what they need. I really try to go above and beyond to build a strong rapport with our customers by trying to remember the small details about them to make their experience at Jack & the Wolfe feel more personal & special. People are more likely to connect with a brand when they feel seen, so that’s what I try my best to do. The team are equally as amazing at offering customer service, and I am very fortunate to work with such kind individuals. 

### How have you managed to balance salon management with hairdressing? 
When I first joined Jack & the Wolfe as the salon manager, I wasn’t involved in hairdressing at all because that wasn’t part of my role. But since I work with such ambitious, talented and creative hairdressers, it really inspired me to try to find a way to incorporate time for my creative work in my schedule. Now that we’ve hired a full-time receptionist, it has given me more flexibility to fulfil my full-time management role, while squeezing in a couple days of creative hairdressing each week. I am grateful for Jack and Lydia as they have been so supportive and always do their best to make their employees feel creatively accomplished. 

### That is amazing to hear! So how is it going so far? 
Although I have been a qualified hairdresser for such a long time, taking on clients at Jack & the Wolfe feels new and exciting. Early on in my hairdressing career, I trained at Toni & Guy and generally when you train at this franchise salon, you must choose to specialise in either styling or colour. At the time, I chose styling and that’s what I still specialise in. I really enjoy working with natural textures, curly hair and fun hairstyles, such as shaggy mullets. During my career break, I did do some mobile hairdressing work, so working in a salon environment again gives me such a buzz! In a commercial environment, hairdressing is very different, as it’s very much back-to-back, but it’s going good so far. I have two words of wisdom for anyone who would like to become a salon manager: Be kind. When it comes to managing people, you really need to a build a bond with these individuals and understand their personal working style. It’s so important to show kindness, empathy and compassion to your team always because you never know what someone is going through. You must be emotionally intelligent, but also logical, so that you can cater to the team without impacting the business. It really can be a juggling act at times, but you must be open and patient so that the customer experience is never compromised no matter what is happening in the background. But, yes—kindness really is the key to being a successful salon manager, in my view. 

### Do you have any go-to resources for business management tips that you can share with us? 
There is course that I am currently doing called the Fantastic Hairdresser by Alan Austin-Smith which teaches strategies on how to run a successful salon business. It’s a great course that I would highly recommend, as it teaches you how to communicate with your team but also trains you on how to make hard business decisions. I am enjoying the course so far and am really inspired by Alan’s insights as an established expert within the hairdressing industry. 
 
### And, finally, do you practice any self-care or wellness rituals to help you relax? 
Yes, I do! I am an avid yoga goer and I like to take a class at least once a week to help me unwind and centre myself. I also practice mindfulness throughout the week in the form of guided meditations and giving gratitude. Things happen in life and work that can sometimes unexpectedly take you off track, so prioritising my wellness is a must for me. After I meditate, I tend to be more logical than emotional, which is exactly what I need to tap into sometimes—especially when managing a busy salon!

## Art with a Purpose: Cecilia Marie Tattoos

What makes her studio unique? Well, it’s Cecilia, herself! When she was an art student, her peers, friends, and even strangers started to ask her to design tattoos for them—which eventually led to her wanting to become a tattoo artist. Reflecting on her military experience, Cecilia shared that getting a tattoo served as her therapy during those times. She emphasized how true this is for a pretty large number of individuals, as lots of people turn to tattoos as a means of alleviating pain or coping with trauma. Cecilia also considers herself an empath, and is sought after by many of her clients for this exact reason. ## **Tell us a little about yourself and your business**

> I have been a licensed Cosmetologist since 1989 and am passionate about keeping up with industry trends, health and safety and making my clients feel and look their best! We offer premium luxury lash extensions,  lash lifts, tinting, facial waxing, lash training and lash artist mentorship.

## Did you re-open your business right away when the governor announced the lift, or did you wait it out?**

> _Yes, I opened the first day we were allowed. My clients and I were ready!_

## How long has your business been open?**

> _We have been open since May 6th, and I have worked every day since. I am working longer days; I’m even working on my days off to get everyone back in so they can enjoy a new set of lashes. I’m working longer hours because each client now takes twice the booking time. This gives me enough time for a spaced and staggered schedule to follow our new safety measures. Each appointment is extended by 15 minutes._

## **What did you do to prepare for re-opening your business?**

> _I started off by buying masks on Walmart’s website, but shipping was ridiculous, and the masks were very expensive. We had to go through many sources to get everything we needed prior to opening. I recommend getting two or more months' worth of PPE \[Personal Protective Equipment.\] Also, I found that Rejuvenate™, a peroxide-based disinfectant, is much easier to find than Barbicide®, so I recommend purchasing that to sanitize surfaces. We also stripped down our luxurious beds and replaced them with a vinyl black waxing pad that’s easy to disinfect between services._

## **Are you implementing any measures that go above and beyond state regulations?**

> _Yes, we are using UV sanitizer and high heat sanitizer which heats up to 250° to sanitize soft items such as lash palettes and masks. We already had these tools in-house, but it wasn’t required. Now, we are going above and beyond making  the UV sanitizer and high heat sanitizer accessible to all our employees and implementing that as a safety protocol. We want to set an example for our employees, so we bought supplies for everyone, even booth renters. It is important to set the example in a business – you either have to meet or exceed the standard._

## **How are you handling re-booking?**

> _I have mostly standing appointments, so I reserved times based on their regular appointment availability._

## **What are some steps you are taking to ensure clients they will be protected from risk of infection?**

> _We ensure that clients are protected from any risk from the moment they step into our business to the moment they leave. Our customers text us when they arrive, and we meet them at the door. We have implemented a “no shoes” policy so we ask that they take off their shoes and we provide them with clean socks. They will wash their hands and sanitize and change into a fresh mask. We also require our clients to sign a waiver with a clean pen. Once the service is done, we direct them to a touchless payment, and they are escorted out the building for a contactless exit. I wear an N-95 mask, a face shield, and sanitize all tools and room per usual state board. I also take extra steps for the customer, such as talking to them about the sanitizing steps I am taking instead of small talk and sending infographics to clients prior to their appointment so that they are at ease the whole time._

## **Did you adjust pricing when you re-opened?**

> _Yes, we increased prices for new customers. Current clients will keep the same price until October 2020. I learned right away that If you have an established clientele, discounts are not necessary. None of my clients expected a discount and tips have been amazing. They truly feel for what we have been through. My clients already trusted me to have the highest standards, so they were absolutely ready to trust me to keep them as safe as possible._

## **What Vagaro features are you currently using to help with reopening?**

> _Forms! Reopening is full of a million things and forms makes it one less thing to worry about. We also rely on email and text marketing more than ever, not only to market our business, but to communicate with our customers. We also sold more gift certificates during this time, more than ever before!_

## **What is one main take away that you want to share with other lash artists?**

> _We’re all in different boats facing the same storm. Everyone is coming from a different experience, fear, or confidence level. Think of your client as someone close to you – how would you want them to feel? How would you take care of them? It’s not a **chore**, it’s a **gift** you give to them. And convey that their safety is your priority. If I can make you have the best day in 7 weeks, then that’s the best feeling in the world. Cheapest therapy you’ll ever get!_

## **What would you consider to be your best reopening investment that you would recommend to other business owners?**

> _Take the time to do it right and your clients will take care of you the way you’re taking care of them._

## **Tell us a little about your business**.

> _We deliver nail care in a sanitary yet chic atmosphere. At the salon, clients are given a pleasant experience as well as service and pampering that exceeds expectations._

## **Were you able to secure any loans during the closure?**

> _We did apply for the PPP loan and a few small business loans, but it was a very difficult process. Once we applied it took a full month to receive any assistance, and what we did receive was a small amount. We also applied for local small business loans, but many of them were based off a lottery. Most of our nail technicians received unemployment and the owner actually helped all of us throughout that process._

## **Did you re-open your business right away when the governor announced the lift, or did you wait it out?**

> _Yes, we opened right away when the governor announced phase 2 of re-opening, which allows us to operate at 50% capacity._

## **How long has your business been open?** 

> _After two months of closure, our nail salon has been open for 7 days now, and we see about 5-7 clients per technician daily. We have been extremely busy since re-opening and our customers are very happy to be back in the salon._

## **What did you do to prepare for re-opening your business?**

> _A week before opening, we deep cleaned the salon and changed the layout to make sure all stations are 6 feet apart. We also created a COVID-19 consent form for our clients to fill out prior to their appointment._

## **Are you implementing any measures that go above and beyond state regulations?** 

> _In addition to the extra sanitation measures, we are also using one-time use liners for our pedicure chairs and one-time use tools._

## **How are you handling re-booking?**

> _Our regular clients knew about the salon re-opening through an email announcement, and they booked their appointment through Vagaro right after. Everything was ready prior to our first day._

## **What was it like on the first day you re-opened?** 

> _Our first day back was calm, smooth, and very exciting! Having online appointments through Vagaro was a win for us since not a lot of nail salons use any type of online scheduling._

## **What are some steps you are taking to ensure clients they will be protected from risk of infection?**

> _We are requiring all clients to wear a mask and wash their hands before touching anything in the salon. We are stocked with masks so if a client comes to their appointment without one, they can purchase a mask for $2. We encourage all clients to maintain social distancing from other customers and technicians during their appointment. We are also taking extra sanitation measures such as a 15-minute buffer between customers to properly disinfect all surfaces._

## **Did you adjust pricing when you re-opened?** 

> _No, we did not adjust pricing. We’re in the middle of a pandemic and it’s a difficult time for everyone. We didn’t want to make it harder on our clients who need to get their nails done to get out of the house and have some “me” time._

## **Are you changing employee hours?** 

> _Yes, we had to adjust our employee hours because the nail salon guidelines in North Carolina require us to operate at 50% capacity. We have 12 people max (customers and nail technicians) in the salon at a time. We have not extended our working hours, and our technicians work 3-4 days a week plus a half day with 5-6 technicians working per day._

## **What Vagaro feature helped your business the most?**

> _Email Marketing really helped with communication with our clients. It was important to stay in touch with our customers during the closure and when we were able to re-open, we emailed our customers the new safety protocols that our nail salon was taking so they knew what to expect at their next appointment._

## **What tips would you like to share with the Vagaro community for those waiting for their state to lift shelter in place orders?**

> _Remember what you love doing and be open-minded about what everyone has gone through because we have all faced different challenges during the pandemic. It means a lot to me as a nail technician to give our employees and clients that peace of mind, and to have that reciprocated._
