Sweeter and less cluttered than Harajuku style and far less “costumey” than the Lolita look lies the Forest Girl; a Japanese style that is turning into one of 2018's most unique fashion trends. Layer upon layer of lace, ruffles and lightweight texture combine for a timeless, sweet look that is infinetly comfortable and wearable by all sizes. Also referred to as the Mori Girl style, this look is infinitely wearable, and the combination of natural fabrics and loose-fitting styles makes for a comfortable look for every day wear or special occasions that's especially suited for fall fashion.

Layering is Key to the Mori Girl Look

Soft, breathable layers in lightweight fabrics like gauze, linen and cotton are the hallmarks of this style. A base layer of lace trimmed leggings or bloomers, topped with a ruffled, A-line or loose-fitting slip completes the first layer. After that, tunics, dresses and sweaters can be added, depending on the look you like and the season. For many Mori Girl styles, each layer peeps out from below the next, creating a frothy, sweet confection of a look.

Accessories

From detachable Peter Pan style collars to frilly socks and kawaii, brimmed hats, accessories are a key component of the Mori Girl look. Lightweight, ethereal and feminine items are a hallmark of this style; while Mori Girl ensembles are often pastel, this style is striking in dark, colorful shades as well.

While stores and lines dedicated to the Mori Girl style are easy to find in Japan, you can pull together the look using pieces found in your local store or online. Artisan fashions, and loose-fitting tunics, sweaters, capes and dresses can be layered to get this look. Cute, lacy socks or tights, lace trimmed cotton leggings and other easy to find pieces can be incorporated as well. Looking for pieces described as “granny chic”, “romantic”, “shabby chic” or “lagenlook” can also help you find the components needed.
