There are a lot of brands I admire, but few have shaped the beauty landscape the way I believe Fenty has. Rihanna doesn’t just create makeup and lingerie. She created a movement around belonging. That’s something I’ve always believed great brands do. They make people feel seen.

For years, shapewear was something women kept secret. It was the unspoken part of every great evening out. You knew it was there, but no one talked about it. SKIMS turned that secret into confidence.  

## Hidden Layers Turn to Everyday Confidence 

I remember when shapewear felt like a quiet ritual. It was the extra effort that helped you feel more put together before stepping out. Everyone had that one piece tucked away.

When WNBA players began wearing SKIMS, it was the same story. These women represent power, performance, and professionalism. SKIMS celebrated that energy by giving them apparel that feels just as strong as it looks.

When I first saw the Nike x SKIMS collab, I smiled. It just made sense.  

Cofounder and Chief Creative Officer, Kim Kardashian, described it as bringing “Nike’s innovation with the SKIMS aesthetic,” and I couldn’t agree more. That one line captures the beauty of the partnership. It’s the perfect intersection of performance and confidence, function, and form.  

I love what this brand symbolizes. Ten years ago, few would have imagined a shapewear brand sharing the same stage as one of the biggest names in athletic performance. Yet here we are, watching SKIMS become part of the athletic narrative. That tells me something powerful about how far the definition of strength has evolved.  

To me, this partnership goes beyond apparel. It represents a mindset shift. That athleticism can look like different body types, different stories, and different expressions of confidence. It’s not just who runs the fastest or jumps the highest anymore. It’s about how people feel in their own skin while they do it.

Watching SKIMS expand reminds me of what happens in music. Some of the best artists start in one genre and then cross over without losing their identity.  

Take Beyonce for example. She moved from R&B to pop, then country and dance, yet her message of empowerment has never changed. Even Taylor Swift shifted from country to pop to indie folk, and her storytelling still connects across every genre.  

SKIMS did the same, but in fashion. They started as shapewear. Now they are in loungewear, menswear, and performance apparel. They broke the boundary from secret to statement. People of all genders and ages now wear their products without hesitation.  

## Bold Campaigns That Spark Conversations 

One of the elements that stands out to me most about SKIMS is how fearlessly they start conversations that others might avoid. Their campaigns are bold, funny, and unapologetically real.  

When I first saw the Nipple Bra campaign, I didn’t believe it was real, but then I thought about how powerful it actually was. It was bold, funny, and deeply strategic. It grabbed headlines and started real conversations about body image and confidence. But it wasn’t just a clever product launch. It was a statement about what it means to have a body and not have to hide it. It made people talk, yes, but more importantly, it made people think. About comfort, confidence, and the way we’ve been taught to present ourselves.  

Then came the Faux Hair Micro String Thong. It was a campaign that seemed to be designed to shock, but beneath the humor was something deeper. It highlighted the very things many have been told to cover up and smooth out or remove. SKIMS took those “flaws” and reframed them as something natural, even beautiful.  

SKIMS knows how to spark curiosity while staying true to its message. Every attention-grabbing idea ties back to the brand’s core: confidence, inclusion, and innovation.

As a woman, I commend them for taking something we once hid and turning it into something we celebrate.

When you’ve been in the beauty industry long enough, you start to see who’s really moving the needle. When I say moving the needle, I don’t only mean when it comes to artistry (because there’s a lot of talent out there), but I also mean with the heart. The reality is that traditional cosmetology schools primarily prepare students for an exam that was created in 1935 rather than for the actual demands of working in a modern salon. TONI&GUY set out to change that.

To help us honor this year’s Pride theme, *Beacon of Love*, we sat down with Vagaro’s own Amari Coffee, Technical Support Representative, and Yi Jeat Kwan, Designer & Photographer to tell us a bit about their LGBTQIA+ story, and what it means to embody the true essence of a beacon of love. First, let’s take a brief history lesson…

## Why We Celebrate Pride

In the evening of June 27th, 1969, the NYPD raided a popular LGBTQIA+ bar, the Stonewall Inn. Patrons at the bar were arrested, beaten, and verbally abused by the police for wearing clothes that didn’t fit the typical gender “norm” at the time. One year later, in 1970, members of the LGBTQIA+ community came together to commemorate the unspeakable things that had happened the year prior, thus paving the way for the Pride month you know today.

While we should never forget its grim origins, it’s even more important to remember what Pride month is really about: a time meant for celebrating our unique differences, sexuality, gender expression, & everything that makes you, you. Through celebrations, parades, parties, and the occasional peaceful protest, Pride allows us to lift one another up and stand proud in solidarity.

## Being Proud of Who You Are: Amari Coffee

Amari boasts a kind soul & a brave heart, both of which are qualities she brings to her skilled work as a Technical Support Representative here at Vagaro. Seamlessly navigating through the questions of hundreds of different businesses, customers, or coworkers, Amari isn’t just a *Vagaro* expert; she’s a *people* expert. To her, being LGBTQIA+ is about celebrating who we are, and fighting against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

While she might say she’s no history buff, Amari enjoys learning about the history & activism behind LGBTQIA+ culture, too. After all, it’s the journey from where we started to where we are today that makes us who we are—not the destination. Now, Amari explains how she gets to use her position as a symbol of love and inclusion by helping colleagues and customers without ever harboring any biases.

## A Spotlight for Love & Acceptance

Amari grew up in a strict household that wasn’t accepting of the LGBTQIA+ community at first—she explained how she knows firsthand what it’s like to feel ashamed of who you are. In the time it’s been since she left, though, she’s come to find the things she didn’t initially receive from her family within the LGBTQIA+ community. That’s exactly why Amari always makes an effort to accept everyone for who they are, and encourages them to live *authentically*.

## Pride in Our Everyday Lives: A Call to Action

Now, sure, we can *talk* about being brave or standing strong alongside our loved ones or even strangers, but we must *act*. We must continue to fight for the inclusion and rights of our LGBTQIA+ peers, family, and friends.

Amari recalls how at the San Francisco Pride parade last year, there were queer mothers giving out free hugs to anyone who was rejected by their family. This simple, yet beautiful notion served as a beacon of hope for Amari, she says, because it showed that even when people *you* love don’t accept you; there’s another community who will.

Amari, thank you so much—not just for sharing a bit about who you are and what Pride means to you, but for being an example of how a *beacon of love* should act. 

## Celebrating Our Differences: What LGBTQIA+ Means to Yi Jeat

Yi Jeat Kwan is an exceptionally-talented photographer, and likely the most compassionate person to ever walk the face of the earth. At Vagaro, he’s loved by coworkers and customers alike—leading the charge on employee photos, business photoshoots, and just about anything that involves the words, *Say cheese*! To Yi Jeat, being in the LGBTQIA+ community means demonstrating love and acceptance towards one another, regardless of our differences. 

> Being in the LGBTQIA+ community is about embracing myself fully and extending that same love and acceptance to others.

Championing diversity and leveraging what makes us unique is what builds a supportive environment where everyone can thrive authentically, whether it be at work, home, the store, etc. And it starts with *you*!

## The Impact of Empathy

Yi Jeat explains how his LGBTQIA+ identity inspires him to empathize with others, especially in the face of adversity. Understandably so, since it can be difficult to stand alongside someone when we don’t understand what they might be going through or experiencing in life. That’s exactly what’s great about LGBTQIA+ culture, though! It allows use to not just set aside those differences, but to rejoice in them; in what makes us *human*.

> LGBTQIA+ culture is deeply meaningful to me because it embodies a vibrant spirit of celebration, love, and positivity. It's not just about embracing diverse identities and experiences but also about fostering a sense of community where acceptance and support thrive. 

## Pride in Our Everyday Lives: Fostering Unity and Inclusion

It’s a beautiful thing when people, from all backgrounds, communities, or cultures, come together to lift one another up. Even though people are so unique, so different, Yi Jeat explains how he loves to see them come together to celebrate diversity & unity. He says its helped him realize the true power of creating memorable moments together, regardless of your differences.

> Support and unity go beyond labels because we're all human in the end.

When it comes to the workplace, Yi Jeat says creating an inclusive environment is key. Things like non-discrimination policies, diversity training, and LGBTQIA+ employee networks could make a huge difference for LGBTQIA+ representation and protection. On a more personal level, Yi Jeat says how *visible* leadership and colleague support always helps him feel empowered to bring his authentic self to work.

In his role as Vagaro’s lead (and only!) photographer, Yi Jeat actively promotes acceptance and understanding for LGBTQIA+ colleagues and customers by advocating for inclusive policies and practices. This would include upholding non-discrimination policies, advocating for LGBTQIA+ representation in marketing efforts, and fostering a supportive environment through awareness campaigns and education. 

> My aim is to create a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

## Hey, Hagai! Thanks for talking with us today. To kick things off, why don’t you explain how important your Jewish heritage was to you growing up & how has its significance evolved today? 

My Jewish heritage growing up was very important. It instilled good family values, along with other important values in me that make up the person I am today. It’s changed over time, too. As I get older, particular values have become more important to me, especially as I try to pass them down to my child as they would pass it on to theirs. You don’t really think too much about that kind of stuff as a kid. You’re too busy being a kid and driving your parents crazy! 

## Are there any aspects of Jewish culture or tradition that are particularly meaningful to you today? 

There are many aspects of my Jewish culture and traditions that are meaningful to me today and will continue to be for the rest of my life. Family is extremely important to me. One aspect of the Jewish culture is caring for your family and being there for one another, through thick and thin. It can be hard to keep traditions alive these days as life gets busier, but for the high holidays, we always come together, no matter what. This is extremely important to me. Another aspect is being a good person in general. This could look like having empathy for your fellow man and woman, and just being a good human being overall.   

## Did you ever experience any challenges related to being Jewish while growing up? How about in the workplace? How did you deal with/overcome them? 

I’ve experienced some challenges being Jewish while growing up. Nothing too crazy. My family and I moved to the states in ’84, when I was only about 8 years old. It was a bit of a culture shock, and I didn’t know English, so that was challenging at first. It didn’t take long for me to overcome this, though! In the workplace, I haven’t faced any challenges directly due to my heritage, at least not that I’m aware of. Regardless, I embrace the general challenges that the workplace, or life, might present!   

## How do you share your Jewish heritage with your colleagues? 

I share my Jewish heritage with my colleagues by sharing stories of my family during Jewish holidays, such as **Hanukkah** and **Passover**.   

## Are there any Jewish values that are particularly important to you in your career?

There are many Jewish values that are important to me in my career. Compassion is one of them. No matter what field I’m in, compassion is extremely important. I don’t think it’s specifically a Jewish value per se, more of a value for us as human beings in general, but, again very important to me in my career. If you honestly care and have compassion for another human being, I believe that’ll help you grow in your career. Compassion is a very powerful tool! Another Jewish value that’s important to me in my career would be my work ethic. This was instilled in me in a very young age. The Jewish religion stresses hard work, so you can provide for your family and enjoy the fruits of your labor. I use this value every day and try to do the best I can in whatever situation it may be.

## Hi, Rashmi! This year's AANHPI theme is "Advancing Leaders through Innovation." Can you share a specific example of how an AANHPI leader's innovation or resilience has influenced you and your journey to where you are in your career now?

One remarkable example from the AANHPI community that has deeply influenced my career journey is the innovative approach of Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo. As a South Asian, seeing someone like Nooyi break barriers and rise to such prominence in a major corporation has been incredibly inspiring. Her strategic vision, resilience in navigating male-dominated spaces, and commitment to diversity and sustainability have impacted PepsiCo's success but also set a powerful example for aspiring leaders like me. Nooyi's ability to blend her cultural heritage with her corporate leadership style serves as a reminder that diversity and inclusion are not only valuable but essential for driving innovation and achieving long-term success in any industry. Her journey motivates me to embrace my own background and unique perspective as strengths in my career endeavors.

## Can you share a bit about your cultural background and heritage? How has being part of the AANHPI community influenced your identity and experiences?

As a South Asian, my cultural background and heritage hold immense significance in shaping who I am today. Growing up, I was immersed in rich traditions, vibrant festivals, and the values of community and family.

Within the AANHPI community, there's a strong sense of solidarity and resilience in the face of challenges. I've been inspired by the stories of trailblazers like Kalpana Chawla, who defied societal expectations to become an astronaut, and Mahatma Gandhi, whose principles of nonviolence and civil disobedience continue to resonate globally.

Being part of the AANHPI community has instilled in me a profound appreciation for diversity, as I've had the opportunity to celebrate not only my own South Asian culture but also to learn from and connect with other Asian and Pacific Islander communities. This sense of unity and shared experiences has enriched my perspective and strengthened my sense of belonging.

## AANHPI leaders have made significant contributions to various sectors, including economic prosperity and technological advancements. How do you think recognizing and celebrating these contributions during AANHPI Heritage Month can inspire future generations within our workforce?

Recognizing and celebrating the contributions of AANHPI leaders during AANHPI Heritage Month can inspire future generations within our workforce by providing role models, fostering a sense of pride, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

## Reflecting on the theme of resilience, can you share a personal or professional anecdote where resilience played a crucial role in overcoming obstacles or achieving success in your career journey?

Resilience has been a cornerstone of my career journey. One notable example is when I faced a setback early in my career. Despite encountering challenges and setbacks, I persevered with determination and resilience. Through hard work, adaptability, and a positive mindset, I was able to overcome obstacles and ultimately achieve success. This experience taught me the importance of resilience in navigating the ups and downs of my career path and reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance to overcome adversity.

## Can you share a memorable moment or experience where you felt a strong sense of pride in your AANHPI heritage while pursuing your career goals? How did this moment shape your outlook on your identity and career path?

A proud moment in my career journey was when I had the chance to mentor a fellow AANHPI colleague who was navigating similar career challenges. Sharing experiences and insights from our cultural heritage strengthened our bond and empowered us both to overcome obstacles with resilience and determination. This experience underscored the importance of solidarity within the AANHPI community and inspired me to continue uplifting others on their career paths.

## How do you envision leveraging your unique cultural perspective and experiences to drive innovation and contribute to the success of Vagaro?

By offering unique insights, understanding diverse customer needs, promoting inclusivity, and guiding culturally sensitive expansion, I aim to contribute to Vagaro's success in a meaningful way.

## What advice would you give to other AANHPI individuals who are navigating their professional journeys? Are there any insights or lessons learned from your own experiences that you believe would be helpful to share with them?

My advice to other AANHPI individuals navigating their professional journeys:

- Embrace Your Identity: Your cultural background is a strength.
- Seek Mentorship: Find mentors who can offer guidance.
- Advocate for Yourself: Speak up for your goals and aspirations.
- Network Strategically: Build a strong professional network.
- Be Resilient: Stay focused and learn from setbacks.

## Hey, Le! Can you share a specific example of how an AANHPI leader's innovation or resilience has influenced you and your journey to where you are in your career now?

I’ve always admired the story of Justin Kan, co-founder of the livestreaming platform Twitch. He is a few years younger than me and also from the San Francisco Bay Area. The idea of television via the internet was not new, but his tactics to build his own channel included strapping a camera on his head and airing that footage 24/7. It seemed like a completely ridiculous setup back then, which was 2007 when I was working in the entertainment industry. By the time he formally launched Twitch and then sold it to Amazon in 2014, I had gone through some career changes and was considering software support as a long-term path. Needless to say, my final decision to pursue tech was heavily influenced by the ridiculousness and success of engineers and entrepreneurs like Kan.

## Can you share a bit about your cultural background and heritage? How has being part of the AANHPI community influenced your identity and experiences?

I was born in Southeast China and immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area at the age of 4, and grew up with many AANHPI peers. As many of them came from similar backgrounds, this provided me with a social network in which I felt a sense of belonging. With that said, sharing my experiences with individuals of other cultures and upbringings has become an important aspect of my identity because it is often the most effective way to support and learn about other communities. 

## AANHPI leaders have made significant contributions to various sectors, including economic prosperity and technological advancements. How do you think recognizing and celebrating these contributions during AANHPI Heritage Month can inspire future generations within our workforce?

It is human nature to seek out peers in a group or setting with whom you are able to establish a connection, and cultural and ethnic identity may be one such form of connection. More importantly, promoting AANHPI Heritage within a given company and industry instills confidence in AANHPI youth that their voices will be heard and that their ideas will have an opportunity to be brought to life within that space. Celebrating our contributions and making our community more visible helps to break down stereotypes that AANHPI talent does not or cannot exist in certain professions. 

## Reflecting on the theme of resilience, can you share a personal or professional anecdote where resilience played a crucial role in overcoming obstacles or achieving success in your career journey?

I was once an avid hiker prior to going through a decade of physical inactivity due to asthma and other reasons. Then, COVID-19 hit and I was stuck at home for a year. Coming out of quarantine and shelter-in-place, I decided I would find a way to get back into hiking. Although my asthma never went away, I stayed resilient, and started small with easy hikes. After a year of practice, I conquered Yosemite’s Half Dome and numerous other summits. This perseverance and mindset have helped shape and guide my career journey significantly over the last few years.

## Can you share a memorable moment or experience where you felt a strong sense of pride in your AANHPI heritage while pursuing your career goals? How did this moment shape your outlook on your identity and career path?

I once worked at a software company which had just been sold by the founder when I got hired. This meant I was coming into the company with brand new leadership who immediately implemented many changes. These rapid changes presented many challenges across all departments, and I had to learn to be adaptable while prospering and helping my team prosper. In this capacity, I managed to advance through two promotions within my first two years at the company. 

During my time there, I thought a lot about my upbringing as a Chinese immigrant because my family arrived to the United States without knowing any English and with hardly any money. My parents held minimum wage jobs for years where they took the bus to and from work, and were out of the house 12 hours a day 6 days a week. I walked to and from school by myself when I was as young as 7 or 8. In short, no matter what new challenges surfaced, we had to find a way to adapt and prosper. And I ultimately brought that same mentality with me into any professional situation I faced as an adult.  

## How do you envision leveraging your unique cultural perspective and experiences to drive innovation and contribute to the success of Vagaro?

In my personal life, I strive to use my own cultural background to better understand and have more sensitivity towards other communities. I feel that this would be a critical quality to have at Vagaro given the diversity of the businesses we support as well as their clientele. First and foremost, our customers must feel that their experiences, both as a business and a community, are valued, respected, and represented on our platform. I would apply my own AANHPI experiences to guide me in how I treat, communicate with, and support our customers, and expect that such efforts would significantly enhance their loyalty to Vagaro.  

## What advice would you give to other AANHPI individuals who are navigating their professional journeys? Are there any insights or lessons learned from your own experiences that you believe would be helpful to share with them?

In my case, my father discouraged me from pursuing many different professions because he thought that Chinese or other Asians could never work in those fields. Obviously, ignore such advice. Aside from that, nurture the relationships within your network by paying attention and learning as much as you can from the paths that your peers are taking. As cliché as it sounds, don’t be afraid to try anything. I’ve held dreams that ended up crashing down because it just didn’t work out, or perhaps I pursued them at the wrong time in my life. On the flipside, at other points in my career, I discovered and developed skills that I never thought would’ve been possible for me. You just never know until you dive in!

Yasmine, our Customer Experience Lead at Vagaro, proudly embraces her Egyptian heritage, adding new perspectives to our workplace culture and broadening our appreciation of diversity. 

“My cultural background is deeply rooted in the rich history, traditions, and customs of Egypt. Our heritage encompasses ancient civilizations, vibrant arts, and diverse culinary traditions that reflect centuries of influences from various cultures. 

For Yasmine, family traditions are key in her cultural identity, with high importance placed upon the cherished value of togetherness. She fondly recalls how her family gathers for holidays like Ramadan and Eid, finding comfort and joy in these moments of shared celebration. These occasions not only reinforce familial bonds, but also serve as connections to her heritage. 

Yasmine also emphasizes the significance of hospitality in her culture. “Guests are always warmly welcomed into our homes and treated with generosity and respect,” she explains, highlighting a value deeply ingrained in the social fabric of Egyptian communities. 

Through Yasmine's insights, we gain a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted beauty of Egyptian heritage and how their traditions foster unity, warmth, and inclusivity within families and communities alike. Her commitment to preserving and sharing these traditions serves as a beacon of cultural pride and understanding in our workplace, contributing to her individual success and the supportive team dynamic at Vagaro. 

During her time here so far, Yasmine has advanced from a Retention Specialist to a Customer Experience Lead. She feels that with her cultural upbringing, she's had the privilege to gain a unique perspective that has contributed to her success, “one that values collaboration, empathy, and understanding.”  

She continues, “My upbringing has instilled in me a strong work ethic, adaptability, and the ability to navigate diverse environments with ease. These qualities have not only contributed to my success but have also enabled me to effectively be a team player and inspire my team.” Yasmine also acknowledges the supportive environment at Vagaro, where values of diversity and inclusion provide her with the space to relate to and understand the diverse clientele she interacts with. 

Yasmine reflects: 

“Overall, my cultural background serves as a source of strength and resilience, empowering me to navigate the complexities of the world and the challenges of my career with confidence and grace. It has enriched my identity and equipped me with the skills and values necessary to engage with the global community with an open mind and a compassionate heart.” 

### Dismantling Stereotypes 

When first approached regarding this spotlight article, Yasmine says she was pleasantly surprised to learn that Arab American Heritage Month existed, noting the lack of representation of Arab individuals in the United States. Yasmine’s candid response sheds light on the broader issue of the need for increased awareness and recognition of Arab American contributions to American society. In response to this realization, Yasmine proposes the following: 

> To foster a better understanding of the diverse Arab American community, we need to promote open dialogue and celebrate more cultural and religious events emphasizing diversity and inclusivity in this community.

Arab Americans have faced discrimination and harassment since their ancestors first immigrated and settled here. However, there was a severe increase in hate crimes and violence against Arab Americans, as well as other communities, following 9/11. In 2015 the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice stated, “The Civil Rights Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and United States Attorneys’ offices have investigated over 800 incidents since 9/11 involving violence, threats, vandalism and arson against Arab Americans, Muslims, Sikhs, South-Asian Americans and other individuals perceived to be of Middle Eastern origin.” 

In response to the alarming increase in hate crimes, various initiatives have emerged to raise awareness, promote tolerance, and advocate for the protection of Arab American rights. These efforts include educational campaigns, community outreach programs, and legal advocacy aimed at combating stereotypes and fostering inclusivity. 

However, Yasmine believes that these efforts need to be more intentional and widespread, extending beyond programs and curriculum. True representation and advocacy are crucial, particularly in smaller communities such as schools, universities, and the workplace, where stereotypes and biases often persist unchecked. 

Mirroring Yasmine’s sentiments, The ADC, a civil rights organization centered around Arab American rights and visibility, stated that “Despite the multicultural philosophy that currently prevails in American education, ADC has found many teachers, and the public at large, not yet sufficiently sensitized to the problem of anti-Arab and anti-Muslim stereotyping.” 

Yasmine reiterates,  

> Recognizing the broad spectrum of contributions made by Arab Americans to our society is vital in challenging stereotypes and biases.

Overall, Yasmine highlights the significance of individual efforts in challenging misconceptions and fostering a more inclusive society. She emphasizes that every opportunity to highlight the education, diversity, and inclusivity valued by Arab individuals is a chance to dismantle stereotypes and promote understanding. By engaging in these conversations and advocating for accurate representation, individuals can contribute to the gradual transformation of societal perceptions.  

She encourages everyone to embrace these moments as opportunities for positive change, affirming that collective action, no matter how small, can lead to significant shifts in attitudes and behaviors. In doing so, she envisions a future where Arab Americans and other marginalized communities are fully recognized, respected, and celebrated for their invaluable contributions to the fabric of American society.

### Sparking the Interest 

Navigating the path to a career can often feel overwhelming, especially for students faced with the pressure of deciding their future profession. While academic classes provide valuable theoretical knowledge, they may not fully prepare individuals for the practical demands of the workforce. This is where internships play a crucial role. Serving as a bridge between academic and professional life, internships offer invaluable real-world experience, allowing students to explore various career paths and gain insight into different industries. 

Brian and Rutik's experiences serve as powerful testaments to the transformative power of internships. Brian, a member of our 2022 summer IT internship cohort, reflects on his journey from academic curiosity to full-time employment in the IT field. Rutik, on the other hand, joined our first formal internship program in the summer 2023 cohort as a Cyber Security intern and continued on as a Cyber Security Temp. 

As testament to the transformative power of internships, Brian shares how he seized the opportunity to translate academic knowledge into practical skills within a professional setting. Here, he reflects on his journey from academic curiosity to full-time employment in the IT field: 

“I discovered my passion for technology during my time at CSU East Bay, where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering. It all started back in 2016 when I undertook the exciting challenge of building my first computer. Even before purchasing all the parts, I dedicated countless hours to researching every aspect of computer hardware and functionality. This hands-on experience ignited my curiosity and laid the foundation for my ongoing interest in IT.” 

We also caught up with Rutik, one of our 2023 interns who has now joined us in our Cyber Security Team. Although he first found interest in this field during his undergraduate studies, a pivotal moment in developing his passions for cybersecurity came from his personal projects: 

“One defining moment for me was when I actively participated in bug hunting on publicly available bug-hunting programs. Engaging with real-world applications and uncovering vulnerabilities firsthand heightened my interest in cybersecurity. Additionally, through various college projects, such as Celestial Learning, I gained practical experience in implementing security measures and understanding the importance of protecting data integrity and privacy. These experiences solidified my passion for cybersecurity and motivated me to pursue further studies and opportunities in this field.” 

### Balancing Work & Life 

While some students manage employment alongside their studies, the transition to a 9–5 workday and corporate responsibilities often brings a noticeable shift to work-life balance. Brian highlights this shift, “The transition from internship to a full-time role definitely changes the work dynamic, bringing forth increased responsibilities and access to new opportunities. This makes work more exciting, as there's always something new to learn and explore.” 

The initial thrill of starting a career can sometimes lead people to inadvertently blur the boundaries between work and personal life, fostering unhealthy habits characterized by overwork and neglect of life's other responsibilities. Brian elaborates on this, “In terms of maintaining a healthy work-life balance during this transition, I've found that prioritizing my well-being is important. Simple habits like staying hydrated and incorporating regular exercise into my routine have been game-changers. Not only do they enhance productivity and focus at work, but they also contribute to my overall well-being and vitality. Finding this balance has been key to navigating the transition seamlessly.” 

Ryan, who also joined our summer 2023 intern program alongside Rutik as a Finance intern, recently transitioned to a full-time role as our Jr. Financial Analyst. He contributes to this discussion by emphasizing, “I would say I try my best to make time for things I still enjoy doing. However, figuring out how I want to spend my free time is still a work in progress. Overall, I would recommend to future interns/beginning full-time workers to still prioritize your passions and hobbies outside of work.” 

### Fighting Impostor Syndrome 

Impostor syndrome, a psychological phenomenon characterized by persistent feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy despite evidence of competence, can often affect individuals transitioning into the workforce—including interns. Despite being aware of their entry-level status and the inherent knowledge gaps compared to more experienced colleagues, interns frequently find themselves grappling with impostor syndrome upon entering the professional environment. 

The discrepancy between interns' perceived capabilities and the perceived abilities of their high-performing colleagues often exacerbates these feelings. Rutik, who has experienced this firsthand, acknowledges, "It's common to doubt one's abilities and feel like you don't belong, especially in a new environment." The pressure to measure up to the standards set by seasoned professionals can intensify these sentiments. 

However, Rutik shares his strategies for mitigating these feelings and building self-confidence. He emphasizes the importance of reframing one's mindset to focus on existing skills and knowledge rather than fixating on perceived deficiencies. Rutik found that seeking validation through positive feedback and recognizing his accomplishments were instrumental in bolstering his confidence. Additionally, he actively sought mentorship and guidance from more experienced colleagues, recognizing the value of their insights and reassurance. Through these efforts and by gradually gaining experience to successfully overcoming challenges, Rutik gradually diminished the impact of impostor syndrome on his professional growth. 

By openly discussing experiences with impostor syndrome and sharing effective coping mechanisms, individuals like Rutik contribute to creating a supportive workplace culture where feelings of self-doubt can be addressed and overcome. This fosters an environment of mutual encouragement and growth, allowing interns and new professionals to thrive as they navigate their careers. 

### Advice for Future Interns 

The goal of every intern is not just to complete their program but to excel and set the stage for a strong career journey. Drawing from his personal advancement from intern to full-time employee at Vagaro, Brian shares invaluable advice rooted in his own experience. 

"As someone who transitioned from an intern to a full-time employee at Vagaro," Brian reflects, "I believe the key to success lies in embracing growth opportunities and staying proactive." Brian's journey at Vagaro has offered him firsthand insight into the potential for professional growth within the organization. He highlights the importance of approaching every task with enthusiasm, regardless of its complexity, recognizing each assignment as a stepping-stone for personal and professional development. 

Remaining receptive to learning, whether through formal training initiatives or hands-on experiences, is key for advancing skills and broadening one's professional horizons. Brian emphasizes the significance of actively striving for excellence in one's role, citing dedication and adaptability as pinnacles of success.

His advice for future interns is clear: by demonstrating dedication and adaptability, individuals can chart a course for long-term success within the organization. 

Ryan, reflecting on his own internship experience, adds a valuable perspective to the discussion, "I think definitely building relationships with other interns makes the experience of work not only less daunting, but also more fun," he suggests. In addition to fostering connections with peers, Ryan encourages interns to proactively seek opportunities for growth and learning. "Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to express your interest in topics you would like to learn more about," he advises. Moreover, Ryan emphasizes the importance of leveraging available resources to enhance one's internship experience, "I wish I took more advantage of all the helpful resources such as getting one-on-one advice on your resume!"  

Together, Brian and Ryan offer comprehensive advice for future interns, emphasizing the significance of embracing growth opportunities, staying proactive, building relationships, and making the most of available resources to maximize their internship experience and set themselves up for long-term success.

How to Achieve Success as a Vagaro Intern!

*As March unfolds, bringing with it the promise of springtime and warmer days, it also marks the commencement of Women’s History Month. This year’s theme centers around remarkable women who passionately advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In our latest exploration, we had the privilege of speaking with two exceptional women who embody these principles in everything they do.*

### Maintaining Community Despite Social Influences 

Despite the diverse backgrounds that shape each woman, a unifying sense of community and solidarity emerges solely based on their gender identity. Under patriarchal norms, women continually navigate the pressure to conform to rigid gender biases. Due to this, understanding the collective strength that women hold from shared experiences is essential. 

Aviana, our Global People Operations Manager, explains:

"It is so easy to fall into the trap of comparing myself to others. Truthfully, it’s a constant struggle. But I actively work on reminding myself that there is room for everyone’s success! I strive to use the accomplishments of the women around me as inspiration and motivation for myself to move forward towards my own goals. When I feel good about myself, that positivity naturally flows out to others.” 

Vee, our Imports & Onboarding Specialist, sheds light on a significant aspect, noting that "[women] are conditioned to be perfect because society views women as objects." However, she believes that fostering genuine kindness among women can be transformative in humanizing each other. Vee actively strives to authentically compliment the women around her and engage in small talk to cultivate a sense of community. 

With TikTok's increasing influence on social interactions and advocacy, users have coined the term “girl’s girl” to describe a genuine advocate for women within their community. 

Vee describes her idea of a “girl’s girl”: 

"The way I define being a girl’s girl is celebrating ALL WOMEN. A girl's girl within a community of women can be defined as someone who actively supports, uplifts, and advocates for other women. They prioritize solidarity, empathy, and collaboration with other women, fostering a sense of sisterhood and mutual empowerment. A girl's girl is someone who celebrates the achievements of other women, offers support during challenges or hardships, and creates a safe and inclusive space where women can freely express themselves and thrive. They value authenticity, respect, and inclusivity, and they actively work towards breaking down barriers and stereotypes that may hinder women's progress. Overall, a girl's girl embodies the spirit of sisterhood and solidarity, striving to create a positive and empowering community for women.”

### The Importance of Representation in the Workplace 

Women experience corporate environments differently than their male counterparts due to the enduring stigmas and challenges that persist in organizations.  

“The challenge is that women can now work at entry-level positions easily; however, they are not seen as leaders because we are too ‘emotional’, or we’re seen as not as assertive as men. We need to break the gender biases, pay discrimination, dress code double standards, and sexual harassment barriers. So, any organizations looking to foster a healthy working environment will see that, proactively, women belong in leadership roles,” Vee explains. “Women are not fairly represented in leadership.” 

In fact, according to a Pew Research study, women accounted for just over 10% of all Fortune 500 CEOs in 2023. The study further revealed representation disparities often begin even earlier, with women accounting for just over 30% of college and university presidents, as of 2023. While this represents more than triple the share compared to 1986, progress has been made, but lingering gaps remain. 

Additionally, there is also a further lack of racial diversity once women reach corporate settings.   

Aviana shares, “I had an employee at a previous employer tell me that she hasn’t seen another Black woman leader at the company, so she just didn’t think it was achievable for her. This is why, as leaders, no matter our gender or race, we must be the ones identifying talent, starting the conversations, and letting our employees know that we think they have the potential to be a leader. We cannot always rely on employees to come to us to tell us that they want to grow in the company, because they might not think it is even a possibility.” 

Being a woman in these settings is undoubtedly challenging. However, it is crucial to recognize and understand the additional struggles that come with intersectional identities. Queer women and women of color, for instance, encounter a multitude of barriers in the workplace, including discrimination, harassment, and pay disparities. 

Pew Research found that “In 2022, Black women earned 70% as much as White men, and Hispanic women earned only 65% as much. The ratio for White women stood at 83%, about the same as the earnings gap overall, while Asian women were closer to parity with White men, making 93% as much.” 

According to data from the Williams Institute at UCLA Law School, 46% of the LGBTQIA+ workforce have faced unfair treatment at some point in their lives, with 57% of them attributing this treatment to religious beliefs. 

Vee believes that in order to counterchallenge these harsh biases and stereotypes, it all comes down to building community and being an ally to the women around you. She further explains that "women can amplify the voices of other women and marginalized groups, ensuring that their perspectives and experiences are heard and valued in discussions and decision-making processes.” 

Representation in the workplace is not merely about meeting diversity quotas or checking boxes; it's about creating an inclusive environment that reflects the richness and diversity of the broader society. A lack of representation not only perpetuates stereotypes and biases but also hinders the potential for innovation and creativity within an organization. 

When women are underrepresented in leadership roles, it sends a message that certain voices and perspectives are not valued at the highest levels. This not only affects the morale and motivation of current employees but also discourages aspiring individuals of diverse backgrounds from pursuing leadership positions. 

Moreover, the importance of representation extends beyond gender to encompass racial and ethnic diversity. As Aviana highlights, seeing someone who looks like you in a leadership role can be a powerful catalyst for breaking down preconceived notions and inspiring others to strive for similar achievements. 

The statistics on earnings gaps underscore the urgent need to address not only gender disparities but also the intersectional issues that contribute to the broader landscape of inequality. 

Studies show that diverse teams lead to better decision-making and enhanced problem-solving capabilities. Organizations benefit greatly from a variety of perspectives, experiences, and approaches, which can only be achieved through genuine representation. 

In essence, the importance of representation in the workplace lies in fostering an environment where every individual feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute their unique insights. It's about dismantling barriers, challenging stereotypes, and creating a workplace that reflects the diverse backgrounds of the world outside its walls.  

As Vee aptly puts it, "When one of us wins, we all win" — emphasizing the collective benefits that come from a workplace that prioritizes and celebrates diversity in all its forms. 

### Advocacy in this Socio-political Climate 

Although social media has fostered a global connection amongst women and their shared experiences that transcend geographical borders, it has also played a role as a platform where dangerous subcultures have the potential to grow.  

Recent research even suggests TikTok’s algorithm is increasingly exposing young male audiences to “extreme misogynistic” content, a concerning trend identified by researchers cited in The Guardian. 

So, amid these barriers, genuinely advocating for women becomes a complex task, requiring a genuine understanding of an individual’s intentions behind their rhetoric. Vee emphasizes that “The most effective way to start promoting change is to acknowledge the diverse minds of women and individuals, helping educate and inform those who may not understand that women, too, deserve the same opportunities as men.” 

She goes on to highlight the importance of allyship and fostering an inclusive environment: “Encouraging individuals to use inclusive language and behavior that respects and values all genders is paramount. This involves avoiding gender stereotypes and assumptions, employing gender-neutral language when possible, and actively listening to and respecting diverse perspectives. Creating opportunities for open and respectful dialogue about gender biases and women's rights is crucial. This encourages individuals to engage in constructive conversations where diverse perspectives are not only heard but also valued, fostering collective action for positive change.” 

Navigating the complexities of genuine advocacy for women amidst modern challenges requires acknowledging diverse perspectives, educating those unfamiliar with the equality women seek, and fostering inclusive environments. As Vee passionately emphasizes, promoting genuine change involves encouraging inclusive language, challenging stereotypes, and actively engaging in open dialogues about gender biases and women's rights. It's through these collective efforts that a community of allies can emerge, contributing to a workplace and society that values and celebrates the diverse experiences and contributions of all individuals, regardless of gender.

### Meet Romey!
Romey, one of our graphic designers at Vagaro, not only brings creativity to her role within the office but also engages in a profound exploration of self-expression beyond the workplace. In addition to her professional endeavors, she actively explores a diverse array of creative outlets, using them as avenues for understanding and expressing her identity. Her choice of clothing, personal art, musical preferences, and literature all play integral roles in this multifaceted exploration. Through these mediums, Romey not only expresses herself but also draws inspiration from the creative works of others. These external influences serve as mirrors to her own experiences, aiding in the development and deeper understanding of her unique perspective and creative identity.

### Meet Piankhi!
On the opposite side of the building, Piankhi oversees one of our Technical Support teams. Reflecting on his journey, he shares that his creativity has been a constant companion throughout his life. Recalling the endless hours spent drawing during the summers of his childhood, Piankhi also discovered a means of expression through music. As a young musician, he played the string bass in the orchestra and symphonette. He also explored his connections with Latin and Caribbean music, Rock & Roll, and Pop due to his familial interests and heritage. Piankhi emphasizes the profound impact of the rise of R&B and Hip Hop on his personal and professional growth, shaping his self-perception, fashion choices, and creative expression: 
> This newer subset of Black music had a huge impact on how I saw myself, the world around me, what I wore, and how I expressed myself creatively. It would later be a big part of both my personal and professional creative identity during my years of freelance graphic and web design, photography, sound engineering, music production, multimedia production, and more.

### Identifying the Contributions 

Black Americans have played a significant role in shaping the landscape of art and media in our country. Romey shares that she consistently recognizes these influences across various mediums. For her, the arts stand out as "one of the single most ubiquitous avenues where Black American contributions can be recognized."  

This recognition sets the stage for Piankhi's reflections on the visibility of Black artists within his upbringing and the ongoing pursuit of meaningful representation within his family's sphere. Despite potential gaps in representation within mainstream media, Piankhi's family remained committed to ensuring a diverse and authentic portrayal of Black contributions in their household. This commitment reflects the broader challenge that Piankhi acknowledges: 

> I believe, however, that while Black musical influence (the music, artists, dance, dress, language, lifestyle, etc.) has made a significant impact on American culture, we are still in the early stages of equity and representation, not just in music, but in many areas of art and media.

### What is Genuine Representation? 

While it's indisputable that Black creatives have made significant contributions to our country's media, arts, and cultural trends, the ongoing discourse surrounding authentic representation and due credit for these innovations remains an unresolved conversation that spans decades. Romey explains: 


> It’s been a pleasure to see a massive increase in representation over the last several years, specifically in the media. And while I’m happy to see it, many leaps that have been made tend to favor very specific depictions of us and our experiences. Media representation, specifically with Black Americans, that reflects experiences with authenticity can sometimes stir up as many uncomfortable feelings as it does jovial ones. But if we are invested in genuine representation, we must embrace all facets of this reality.

Romey’s perspective highlights the complexities that come with increased representation, shedding light on the need for a more comprehensive and authentic portrayal of Black experiences. As Black audiences are able to identify more with the people shown on screen, there is the emphasis to also embrace the diversity of narratives that come with their stories, rather than the ones that highlight desired perspectives in history. 

### Empowering and Supporting Black Creatives 

Black History Month prompts reflection on fostering inclusivity and equity within organizations, particularly in fields like design with glaring underrepresentation, and there's a pressing need to address the challenges faced by Black professionals. The awareness brought by this month's theme shines a spotlight on a stark reality: "Lless than 5% of designers are Black, and fewer than 10% of Black students enroll in undergraduate design programs," as reported by [FastCompany](https://www.fastcompany.com/90767913/diversity-in-design-is-working-toward-an-industry-filled-with-black-creatives). 

Amid this discussion, Romey offers valuable insights: 

> Black professionals can sometimes feel invisible in their organizations, because in some cases, they effectively are. Make sure contributions don’t go unremarked upon. Don’t let achievements go unrecognized. When decisions are being made, ask yourself if the discussion would benefit from different voices. Be open to hearing how you’ve fallen short and make changes. It won’t always be comfortable, but it will go a long way.

Romey expands on this by emphasizing the importance of supportive environments in creative fields. Her most impactful experiences occurred within organizations that not only trusted her but also valued her expertise. The assurance of being genuinely heard during collaborations and receiving meaningful feedback played a pivotal role in giving her the confidence needed to embrace creative risks. According to Romey, a purposeful approach to identifying necessary support, and fostering an open & curious mindset are key.

## To kick things off, tell us a bit about your origins with Vagaro! How long have you worked here? What was your initial position?

I started with Vagaro in June of 2021 as a support agent and have been with the company for a little over two years!


## Now, let’s fast forward a bit. What’s your current position, and can you walk us through what a typical day might look like for you?

I’m currently a Technical Trainer! My typical day consists of hosting webinars, personalized one-on-one training with businesses, and trying to improve what we already offer, whether it’s activities for new-hire training, or creating internal training for our current support agents.


## Before starting at Vagaro, did you expect to find yourself in your current career field, or did you change direction after becoming an employee with Vagaro?

I always wanted to pursue a field in teaching, so training fits in perfectly with the direction I wanted to go in, and it’s something I enjoy doing.


## What kind of experience did you have prior to joining the company?

My experience has always been in customer service and working in call centers. I’ve worked in various departments, whether it was customer service, technical support, sales, or retention. I was also a lead at a call center for a cell phone provider, so I’m very comfortable with the call center environment.


## How would you say your time at Vagaro helped prepare or guide you toward your current position? Was it a linear journey?

It was definitely a linear journey, starting as a Support Agent, moving to a Customer Support Lead role, then becoming a Technical Trainer. Vagaro is unlike any other company in the sense that I’ve never worked in an environment where my peers are such positive and motivating individuals. The culture and coworkers were really what encouraged me to decide that training was the right path for me and solidified my decision.


## What kind of advice would you give to someone who may be looking to climb the ladder within their own department, or even branch out into another career field?

Be open to feedback & criticism; be coachable. Ask questions and always be willing to learn. Engage with peers that are in fields that you are interested in. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice—everyone is always willing to uplift one another here. Progress isn’t instant. Let things take their time.

## To kick things off, tell us a bit about your origins with Vagaro! How long have you worked here? What was your initial position?

I've worked here for about three years now. I started as a Customer Support Representative, then found myself as a Support Mentor before landing my current role.


## Now, let’s fast forward a bit. What’s your current position, and can you walk us through what a typical day might look like for you?

My current position is Software Engineer Level 2. One of the things I love most about this role is how different the day-to-day can be from one month to the next. On my current project, MySite, a typical day will start with a quick meeting with the Development Team which will set me on track for any features or bugs to address for the day. The majority of my time is spent staring at mine and others’ code. Depending on the day, it may end in a late-night meeting with Development again to keep everyone on the same page.


## Before starting at Vagaro, did you expect to find yourself in your current career field, or did you change direction after becoming an employee with Vagaro? 

This is definitely the career I was hoping to get into, but I originally didn't imagine it would still be with Vagaro. Everything has worked itself out pretty amazingly and I couldn't be more grateful.


## What kind of experience did you have prior to joining the company?

I had general customer service experience, but more importantly, I also had development experience making small web apps and tracking software for the City of Oakland.


## How would you say your time at Vagaro helped prepare or guide you toward your current position? Was it a linear journey?

Customer Support definitely helped me with how to communicate with our overseas Development Team and how in depth our bug reporting needs to be. It also greatly helped me understand the Vagaro product itself.


## What kind of advice would you give to someone who may be looking to climb the ladder within their own department, or even branch out into another career field?

I think it's important to let your manager/supervisor know your goals, show interest, and of course, show capability in whatever way you can!

I’ve worked at Vagaro for about two and a half years and was originally hired on as a Customer Support Representative.


## Now, let’s fast forward a bit. What’s your current position, and can you walk us through what a typical day might look like for you?

I’m currently a Content Writer! My typical day involves writing (of course) and publishing articles or creating pieces of content for other teams that need it. It’s also not uncommon for me to conduct interviews here and there for my articles, like in this case, myself!


## Before starting at Vagaro, did you expect to find yourself in your current career field, or did you change direction after becoming an employee with Vagaro? 

Creative writing and storytelling have always been something that I’ve loved. Even before I knew *how* to write, my parents would help me spin together wild bedtime stories or tall tales. Truth be told, I didn’t see myself becoming a writer when I thought of careers, though. It was always something that seemed too far-fetched or unrealistic—I was told by many that it was merely a hobby. Within my first week at Vagaro, though, I met a Copywriter who gave me a glimpse into what this world was like. When it became clear to me that writing as a career was within my grasp, and not some wish, I made it my personal goal to follow my passion once again and become one!


## What kind of experience did you have prior to joining the company?

The majority of my professional experience is actually in the wellness and tech industries. Vagaro was a perfect fit right away since it blended not only my previous expertise, but my interests as well! My writing experience and abilities are the products of years of help, workshops, feedback, and collaboration from too many selfless professors, teachers, family members, and friends who spent much of their own time to help me get to where I am today. I can’t thank each of them enough.


## How would you say your time at Vagaro helped prepare or guide you toward your current position? Was it a linear journey?

As I mentioned before, I always thought of becoming a writer in the same way that I thought of becoming the next hit popstar—the chances were slim! It wasn’t until I was enlightened about the world of content & copywriting by those I met at Vagaro that I had realized it was something I could actually do! Much like Sam & Neomi, I also started in Customer Support, first as an agent, then as a mentor. Networking cross-functionally throughout a majority of the teams in the company, and the experience I gained on the support floor definitely helped prepare me for my current position. Eventually, my passion and preparation were met with an opportunity.


## What kind of advice would you give to someone who may be looking to climb the ladder within their own department, or even branch out into another career field?

If there’s something that you want to achieve, accomplish, reach—whatever it is, you can do it. You have to be willing to do it *yourself*, though. I feel like it’s common for a lot of us to wait on external things/people/the universe to lay our paths out for us. It’s up to us to be our best advocate, though! If there’s a move or a change that you’d like to make in your career or workplace, network and express your interests with those in that department, self-reflect to understand the value that you can bring to that team, and then try to become even better at whatever it is you might do! That preparation will set you up for ultimate success once an opportunity comes your way.

Vagaro Employee Spotlight: Growth Within Vagaro

September is a month of great significance for Hispanic- and Latin-Americans. That’s because September 15 officially begins National Hispanic Heritage Month, which will run through October 15. Originally conceived by President Johnson as a week-long celebration in 1968, it was extended to a full month by President Reagan in 1988 to fully honor the rich history, culture, and many contributions of Hispanic and Latin Americans. 

Vagaro celebrates the rich tapestry of traditions that will be on display over the next six weeks and shares the universal values that underpin them all: deep love for family, kindness to others & hard work. We’re glad to introduce you to two exemplary Vagaro employees who are members of the Bay Area’s thriving Hispanic and Latinx community. They share what their culture means to them, how they embrace it and how they plan to celebrate it. 

## Liz Olveda – Sr. Communications Manager

**1. What is your name and what is your role at Vagaro?**

My name is Elizabeth Olveda, and I am the Senior Communications Manager here at Vagaro. 

**2. Hispanic heritage is shared by a huge collective of peoples in 33 Latin American countries & Spain. What is your background?** 

I am proud to be Mexican! My mom's side of the family comes from the state of Chihuahua, and my dad's side is from Jalisco. Both my parents were born here in California. 

**3. What does your Hispanic heritage mean to you? What parts of it do you embody, or try to, every day?**

My Latina heritage means carrying a strong sense of pride in my family, embracing unity within our community, the power of resilience in overcoming adversity, and cultural preservation. 

Every day, I am forever grateful and remind myself of the sacrifices and hard work my loving ancestors, grandparents, parents, tías & tíos, siblings, cousins and other extended family carried out to plant the seeds for what I’ve been able to achieve and what makes me who I am today. I embrace these same values of being kind, loving, and hardworking to embody their spirit. 

**4. National Hispanic & Latin American Heritage Month runs from 9/15–10/15. How will you celebrate this month & engage with your culture?**

I will celebrate by spending time with my loved ones at various Latino Heritage Month celebrations where the emphasis on live music, dancing, singing, art, and especially food, brings our diverse and colorful culture to the forefront. 

I’m thankful that we live in the Bay Area, where these events are plentiful. And, Mexican Independence Day falls on September 16, which is also a significant holiday for me and my family. 

**5. This month is about celebrating exemplary Latin & Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our society. Who is that for you? Whose example do you follow or embody?**

Cesar Chavez, who was a Mexican American labor leader and tireless civil rights activist. He helped achieve better wages, working conditions, treatment and other benefits for farm workers and their families. His dedication to, and empowerment of, underprivileged communities continues to inspire me to stand up for what’s right and help those who may have less. 

**6. Have you or someone you are close to (family, friends, etc.) encountered any stereotypes, misconceptions or instances of intolerance related to your culture & heritage?**

Yes, unfortunately, myself and almost all my closest loved ones have. I think the best way to deal with this is to speak up against their prejudice, counter their ignorance by highlighting achievements and contributions of those they’re being prejudiced toward, and most of all, continue proving them wrong. 

**7. What do you want others outside of your community to know and understand about Latin & Hispanic Americans and their contributions?**

It’s important to realize how diverse our community is; Mexican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Salvadoran, Colombian, Cuban, and so many more. And our contributions are just as varied and plentiful! From activism to sports & science and everything in between, so many of these contributions have played an integral role in our society. Ultimately, I want people to know most of us are hardworking individuals with some of the biggest hearts.

My name is Gerardo Barrón, and I am a Sales Representative at Vagaro.

**3. What does your Hispanic/Latinx heritage mean to you? What parts of it do you embody, or try to, every day?**

Engaging with my Hispanic/Latinx heritage, for me, is about remembering my roots and my culture. That’s what shaped me into who I am today. 

I’d say the biggest aspect for me is the Spanish language. My parents made sure to raise me to speak Spanish and it is something that I am not only proud of, but I embody every day. It’s something that I will pass down to my children. 
 
**4. National Hispanic & Latin American Heritage Month runs from 9/15–10/15. How will you celebrate this month & engage with your culture?**

September 16 is Mexican Independence Day, which is a day to celebrate and honor the country of my roots. Every year my family and I do something fun, which usually consists of lots of food, music...and tequila!

If I had to choose a person from our community who has positively influenced and enriched our society, it would be my father. 

My father is a hardworking individual who has worked in construction for decades. He has literally and figuratively helped build the Bay Area. Most notably, he worked on the Sales Force Park in San Francisco. It is thanks to hardworking individuals, like my father, that we have the beautiful buildings and offices that we work in. They have contributed so much to the Bay Area. 
 
**6. What do you want others outside of your community to know and understand about Hispanic & Latin Americans and their contributions?**

What I want others outside of my community to know and understand about Hispanic & Latin Americans the most is that we are a diverse group of hardworking individuals who are loving and caring. 
 
**7. Have you had the opportunity to help Hispanic or Latinx-owned businesses through Vagaro?**

Absolutely! As a Spanish speaker, I work with Spanish-speaking Hispanic or Latinx clients every day. It brings a smile to my face when I can positively impact someone’s life and business. By just removing a potential language barrier, I can create a positive experience where there otherwise might have been a negative one. 

These clients always express their gratitude, which is a humbling experience. For me, it’s all a way of paying homage to not only my roots, but to my family as well.

## Thank you for taking a moment to answer these questions! Can you tell us a little bit about what you did before working in Support at Vagaro?

I have spent most of my professional career in Customer Support, with my experience ranging from Retail Customer Support to being contracted to help Meta launch a Customer Support pipeline for customers with hacked or compromised accounts.

## How did your previous experience prepare you for what you do in Support here?

Being someone with an immense drive for problem-solving, Customer Support has always been something that I have enjoyed doing. Throughout all my experience, I have always had the same goal: Solve the problem. This is something I have carried with me throughout my career in Customer Support and is something I continue to apply each & every day.

## What do you do in Support? Can you walk us through a typical day?

I am part of the new Vagaro Merchant Services (VMS) Support Team that was recently rolled out, working in collaboration with our VMS Team to resolve any issues our customers are encountering with Credit Card Processing. During my day-to-day, I assist customers via phone or chat with any questions they might have, and also set aside time each day to respond to any support emails I receive.

## How does Support work with other departments? Is there a process or team that you enjoy working with the most?

Being in Support, it never feels like an answer is ever too far away. Even if it’s not an inquiry we can resolve directly through Support, there are always channels we can reach out to in order to find an answer and a resolution. This might be an obvious answer, but I really enjoy working directly with our VMS Team the most. They are a very supportive team, and we would not be able to offer the proper VMS support without them!

## What’s the question you get most often?

It’s hard to pinpoint a single question that is overwhelmingly asked more often than others, but since joining the VMS Support Team, I would say the most frequent questions I am asked now are regarding deposits.

## What’s the most important aspect of your job, and which is your favorite?

The most important aspect is ensuring I am giving the correct information to the correct individual, and being sure I take the necessary steps to be proactive, rather than not reactive. My favorite part of the job is getting to interact with so many different people from so many different backgrounds and interests. As Vagaro grows, the types of businesses and people we encounter every day grow with it, and that is a very cool thing to be a part of.

## Thank you for taking a moment to answer these questions! Can you tell us a little bit about what you did before working in Support at Vagaro?

I worked as an Events & Group Housing Coordinator at the Marriott. My responsibilities included organizing conventions, coordinating wedding groups, managing NFL team rooms, and more.

## How did your previous experience prepare you for what you do in Support?

Through my extensive experience in the hospitality industry, I have honed my skills in effectively communicating with a diverse range of customers. My ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner has proven to be highly effective in ensuring that customers retain the information they need.

##What do you do in Support? Can you walk us through a typical day?

I am an evening/PM Lead in Customer Support. On a typical day, my goals are to prioritize urgent callbacks, send agents to their breaks & lunches, catch up on any important messages and pass down notes from the morning/AM leads & managers, and do a mental health check with everyone on the team, of course. 

## How does Support work with other departments? Is there a process or team that you enjoy working with the most?

Support collaborates closely with other departments to ensure our operations stay seamless, and our businesses satisfied. We work with the Product Team to understand user needs and communicate feedback. Our partnership with the Development Team helps resolve technical issues promptly. We coordinate with the Imports Team to manage order-related inquiries efficiently. And our engagement with the Merchant Services Team helps resolve payment & transaction issues swiftly, enhancing the overall customer experience. Out of all of the departments that we work with, the [Vagaro Design Services Team](https://www.vagaro.com/learn/marketing-design-services-business) is my favorite department. Customers often need help resizing their logos, venue gallery photos, etc. By working with our Design Services Team, our businesses can make their visions a reality.

Staying informed on newly released updates & features in Vagaro. Our company is growing and improving at a very fast pace, so I should as well. Being a reliable source of information for my team is my favorite part of my job.

## Thank you for taking a moment to answer these questions! Can you tell us a little bit about what you did before working in Support at Vagaro?

I served as a Customer Success Manager for a remote access company. In this role, my responsibilities centered around cultivating and maintaining strong customer relationships within an account portfolio consisting of over 200 educational institutions. I proactively identified avenues for account expansion and growth, leveraging strategic opportunities to enhance the value provided to our clients.

## How did your previous experience prepare you for what you do in Support?

My prior professional experience has equipped me for my current role in Support through its emphasis on customer relationship management and account growth. In my former position as a Customer Success Manager, I honed the skills necessary to provide exceptional assistance to customers.

## What do you do in Support? Can you walk us through a typical day?

A typical day-to-day routine for a Technical Support Representative (TSR) involves a variety of tasks, one of them being providing step-by-step guidance to businesses or customers of businesses on how to resolve any technical issues or concerns they may be facing. This process might look like walking the caller through troubleshooting procedures, suggesting settings adjustments, or assisting with software installations & updates. TSRs will also coordinate with colleagues, developers, or other teams to find solutions for intricate technical issues. This ultimately ensures that whoever we’re speaking with is satisfied with the solutions that we provide them! As a TSR, following up with clients to confirm problem resolution and to collect feedback on their support experience plays a major role in my typical day.

## How does Support work with other departments? Is there a process or team that you enjoy working with the most?

I take great joy in collaborating with all of my colleagues & mentors and engaging in brainstorming sessions aimed at devising innovative solutions to address the needs of anyone who might use Vagaro. I don’t think I have a favorite department currently—they’re all pretty great!

## What’s the question you get most often?

A question that I get the most often is, “How do I leave you a good review for helping me today?”

## What’s the most important aspect of your job, and which is your favorite?

The heart of this role revolves around aiding businesses in grasping the essence of our software and its value. Given my background as a business owner, I intimately understand the hurdles of starting a business and the toll it can take. As a TSR, my goal is to help lighten this load, ultimately making the entire business-management journey a tad smoother for all those involved.

## Thanks for taking the time to talk to us today! Let’s start with a little background on what the Vagaro Merchant Services Team does. How is the VMS Team different from other parts of Customer Service?
The VMS team differs from other parts of regular support because we are a small, close team with strong skills in specific topics, specializing in all things Merchant Services. Because the team is so small, we have to be efficient and proficient in what we do.

## What made you choose a position on Vagaro’s Merchant Services Team?
My story is unique. I worked for our processing bank’s Risk Team and was the Risk Analyst assigned to Vagaro’s portfolio. I spent 5 years getting to know Vagaro, their customers and their Merchant Services Team. When I was looking to change jobs, I wanted to pursue employment with Vagaro since it was something I grew to love & enjoy.

## What would you feel is the most important aspect of your job, and which is your favorite?
The most important aspect of my job is managing the team that mitigates Vagaro’s risk exposure while also allowing for healthy growth of the business. My favorite part of the job is being able to mentor my team and help them grow in their careers.

## How is the VMS Team instrumental in the overall success of Vagaro, and how do you collaborate with other departments on a daily basis?
The VMS Team is instrumental in the overall success of Vagaro because they are subject matter experts on all things Merchant Services. We have open communication with other departments such as Sales and Support. We collaborate on how to improve the customer experience and how we can solve any issues we see, as well as how we can improve as a company.

## If Vagaro didn’t have a Merchant Services Team, how different do you think the company would be today, and what are some of the limitations that our business customers would face?
Without VMS, Vagaro wouldn’t be what it is today. More than ever before, accepting card payments is vital to a business's success. [We wouldn’t be] an all-in-one software company.

## What would you suggest to anyone wanting to pursue a career in Merchant Services, credit card processing, or fraud verification? Is the career path linear?
I would suggest to anyone pursuing a career in Merchant Services, credit card processing, or fraud verification to start in Support. Learn the company & customers from the ground, up. Increase your knowledge by asking questions and gaining an understanding of how the card industry works and the challenges that merchants face.

VMS is able to dig a little deeper, as we have access to more reports & applications, and we work directly with the processing bank. We work with Support to best advise the merchants using the same reports that they see, but sometimes accounts need a little more research, and we’re able to do that in VMS.

## What made you choose a position on Vagaro’s Merchant Services Team?
After working in the hotel industry for five years, I was looking for something different. The job duties of Merchant Services aligned with the responsibilities I had at the hotel. After my interview with Kerry and Ashley here at Vagaro, I knew that I would enjoy the culture of Vagaro along with the job duties of Merchant Services.

## What would you feel is the most important aspect of your job, and which is your favorite?
The most important aspect of my job is educating the merchants. While we have a lot of merchants who have been processing with us for a long time, there are still a lot of newer merchants who don’t know that there are rules to processing credit cards. Reviewing these rules and educating the merchant helps them to better run their business. My favorite part of VMS is reviewing missing deposits. It’s pretty fun being a detective trying to track down or figure out what happened to a merchant’s funds & helping them out in that way.

## How is the VMS Team instrumental in the overall success of Vagaro, and how do you collaborate with other departments daily?
The subdepartments of VMS help ensure that businesses are set up for credit card processing success. Our SDRs (Sales Development Representatives) help new merchants sign up for VMS and let them know about the best features. Our Operational Team assists our merchants with all questions regarding credit card processing, from missing deposits & updating their account to chargebacks, underwriting and everything in between. Our Fraud/Risk Department reviews all new Vagaro accounts and merchant accounts to ensure that there isn’t any fraudulent activity going on. We work with other departments by offering support and educating them on the basics of credit card processing so that they can assist our merchants.

## If Vagaro didn’t have a Merchant Services Team, how different do you think the company would be today, and what are some of the limitations that our business customers would face?
VMS was one of the final pieces to help make Vagaro a one-stop shop for our businesses. Our businesses don’t have to go out hunting for a credit card processor; we are right here for them. By having Vagaro Merchant Services, our businesses are able to reconcile their transaction list, deposit reports, collect rent, and even process Vagaro Pay Later transactions for their customers who need to pay in installments. If Vagaro Merchant Services was not around, businesses would not have any of these features integrated into their software.

## What would you suggest to anyone wanting to pursue a career in Merchant Services, credit card processing, or fraud verification? Is the career path linear?
Develop a strong foundation in finance & technology. Understanding the fundamentals of finance, payment systems, and technology will be extremely valuable. Familiarize yourself with concepts such as payment processing, transaction security, risk management, fraud prevention techniques, and regulatory compliance. While the career path in these fields may have some linear progression, it can also have various branching opportunities. You may have opportunities to work with different types of organizations, including banks, payment processors, merchant service providers, or dedicated fraud prevention companies.

Vagaro Employee Spotlight: Vagaro Merchant Services Team

In the United States, February is known as Black History Month. It was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson to celebrate the history & culture of African Americans in this country. Originally, it was celebrated during the second week of February, to coincide with Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays. And over time, the week-long event (classes, lectures, performances) grew into what is now Black History Month (BHM). 
 
The beautiful thing about Black History Month is that anyone can get involved. Whether you’re Black or not, celebrating BHM is a great way to recognize the contributions Black people make to our society & culture. 
 
Here are five ways you can support Black culture through your business: 
 
## 1.	Get Listed as “Black-Owned” on Google 
 
If you’re a Black business owner, make sure your business profile is listed as “Black Owned” online. This way, when someone Googles “Black-owned hair salon” your business will pop up in their search. It’s a really great way for your business to stand out & attract clientele.

You can also compile a list of Black-owned businesses near your office or areas where a majority of your employees live. Be sure to include a wide array of business types on this list! You can then share this index as a resource with your employees and encourage them to use their services and/or purchase their products. Encouraging your employees to use their purchasing power with these businesses is a great way to help support the local Black community. And, according to Brookings Institute research , Black-owned businesses are much more likely to hire Black workers; meaning you’re helping your employees to support not only these businesses, but their employees and their respective livelihoods as well. 

 
## 2.	Partner with Black Business Owners 
 
Did you know that, as of 2019, [women of color made up 89% of newly opened businesses in the US](https://www.fastcompany.com/90408156/women-of-color-are-starting-businesses-faster-than-anyone)? That’s quite remarkable and these numbers help to potentially connect with Black business owners in your area. 
 
The [Vagaro Marketplace](https://www.vagaro.com/pro/marketplace) is another great resource in finding businesses of color. Consider connecting with one to start a partnership where you each offer deals for clients on services or products for mentioning each other’s businesses, which can ultimately benefit both parties. 

When partnering with Black-owned businesses, make sure your efforts are successful by measuring key goals like targets for supplier diversity, collaboration initiatives, or community engagement. You can highlight these successful partnerships via your company’s marketing channels and leading by example. Providing positive examples can also influence other companies to take the same initiatives to support Black-owned businesses. 

Also, consider making direct investments in Black-owned businesses, either through partnerships, equity investments, or other forms of financial support. Don’t just make it a one-time thing, either. You can commission or collaborate with Black business professionals, artists, creatives and service providers for special projects, artwork, and much more continuously throughout the year. This helps ensure your efforts are authentic, genuine, and long-lasting. 

## 3.	Diversify Your Marketing 
 
If you haven’t gotten the clue yet, it’s all about inclusion. In the last few years, we’ve seen big labels and brands start to include people of all races, sizes & ages in their marketing, and you should be too. Inclusion isn’t just in, it’s here to stay because it’s the right thing to do, both as individuals & business owners.

Consumers want to see themselves reflected in the businesses they support. Having more diversity in your marketing also shows how wide your skillset is. It stands to reason that hair stylists who work on all hair types earn more money. 
Something else to try is running educational campaigns relevant to your industry that celebrate Black History Month. Ensure that these campaigns are authentic, respectful, and contribute positively to the cultural dialogue. 

## 4.	Invite Black Thought Leaders 
 
Hosting an annual event or kickoff celebration for your business? Well, why not invite Black Thought Leaders in your industry to be keynote speakers? This is a great way to connect, support & learn from other industry professionals. Often, people have questions for the Black community, but don’t know where to ask them. This provides a great opportunity to get conversations going & business flowing.

Such diversity of thought can lead to more creativity, innovation, and a more well-rounded approach to business challenges, while also fostering a sense of belonging and motivation among an often-underrepresented group. Inviting Black speakers can ultimately lead to a more inclusive and positive company culture which ultimately benefits the entire team. 

Statistics from recent Pew Research Center [studies](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/08/31/black-workers-views-and-experiences-in-the-us-labor-force-stand-out-in-key-ways/) show that Black workers still earn less than those in other groups to this day. Most importantly, then, it is crucial that your business pays them appropriately for both their time and the immense value they bring to your organization.

Ideally, though, if your company is planning a set list of events ahead of time, inviting Black speakers and thought leaders throughout the year is the best way to create a truly authentic initiative to celebrate the Black community and appreciate their contributions.   

 
## 5.	Use Social Media 
 
Social media is such a powerful & impactful [tool](https://www.vagaro.com/learn/beauty/13-marketing-ideas-for-your-salon#5-utilize-social-media) for businesses. Use it for good and support BHM by posting positive quotes from influential Black leaders, use hashtags or post more inclusive imagery on your business page, for example. You can even start to follow some Black owners in your industry and encourage your followers to do the same.

Going beyond that, your team can and should create content highlighting the achievements, contributions, and history of Black individuals and communities. Take the time to delve a little bit deeper to share their inspiring stories. This can be carried out with community leaders, Black employees within your organization, or even clients of your business!  

Highlighting your Black team members not only helps your business celebrate diversity and promotes inclusivity, but it can also humanize your brand. Nowadays, social media followers love nothing more than “getting to know” the faces behind the brand. Additionally, through social media initiatives, businesses can partner with Black influencers or other thought leaders aligning with your brand values. They can help amplify your messaging, reach a broader audience, and bring authenticity to your Black History Month campaigns. 

Transitively, your business can also use your platforms to share content created by Black professionals in your industry and beyond. Simply reposting or sharing their work on your social accounts can help bring their messaging to wider audiences and ultimately has the potential to help them gain more followers and support. This also goes for nonprofits and other organizations that focus on issues important to the Black community. Encouraging your followers to support, donate, or otherwise get involved in these initiatives can have a resounding effect that reaches far beyond social media. 

Every day is an opportunity to support Black-owned businesses, but a great time is during Black History Month. Honoring those who innovate our world & culture is a win-win for communities & businesses alike.
