The ‘90s brought us many gems: great music, TV shows we still can’t get enough of (we’re talking about you, Friends), and plenty of hair and style ideas. Of course, like all trends, those in the ‘90s eventually died out, replaced by the funkier looks of the 2000s.

Lately, it seems we’re more nostalgic for the ‘90s than ever. How else can you explain the resurgence of chokers, Doc Martens, and t-shirts layered under dresses? If you’re already dressing like it’s 20 years ago, you might as well do your hair that way, too. How? Here are some throwback ‘90s hairstyles to emulate ASAP.

1. Stick-Straight Hair

It seemed that every pop starlet and actress in the ‘90s had long, stick-straight hair. From Alanis Morissette to the Olsen Twins, you too can have the straight hair of your dreams. If you have naturally straight hair already, this look is easy for your stylist to pull off. If your hair is curled or wavy, it will take longer to make this ‘do work. Most of today’s heat styling tools are gentler on hair and leave no frizz. Make sure to ask for finishing cream. You might want to add barrettes on either side of your face as well.

2. Crimped Hair

The opposite of stick-straight hair is crimping. This trend really blew up in the early 2000s, but it actually started in the ‘90s. To get hair ala early Britney Spears, ask your hairstylist to apply a crimping iron on freshly-cleaned hair. You can choose to get your whole head crimped or just sections. From there, leave your hair down or style it in an easy, breezy ponytail. Crimping is cute, fast, and looks good on every hair color.

3. Space Buns

Many modern celebs of today sport space buns, but this is another hairstyle we have the ‘90s to thank. Stars like Gwen Stefani spearheaded this convenient ‘do. To get your own set of space buns, again, start with clean hair. Your hairstylist will split your hair into sections, making high pigtails. Then they’ll take the strands of hair in each pigtail and wrap them around until they make a knot. Using bobby pins or a ponytail holder, they’ll finish the first bun and then repeat the process for the second. Remember to wear bobby pins at the back of your head to tame any loose hairs!

So there you have it. Next time you’re feeling ‘90s-inspired, you have three fantastic looks you can take to your hairstylist.
