Thinning shears are a hair-cutting tool that removes some of the bulk from thick hair without having a significant impact on the overall length and style of the hair. Often they are used as an alternative to adding dramatic layers to a hairstyle. If you're thinking about having your hair thinned out using shears, however, there are some things you should know.

Not for Use on Curly/Wavy Hair

Keep in mind that if you have very curly or wavy hair, shears probably aren't the best option for thinning out your locks. Unfortunately, thinning shears have the tendency to make curly hair "poof" or frizz out, so you may be better off having your stylist add layers to remove some of that bulk.

Shouldn't Be Used Frequently

Thinning shears should only be used on occasion to thin out hair—not every single time you get your hair cut or trimmed. Overuse of thinning shears can gradually change the texture of your hair, making it extremely thin towards the ends. This makes your hair prone to breakage and other damage. Try only having your hair thinned out every few visits to your stylist for best results.

Best Used When Hair is Dry

We recommend having your trusted stylist thin your hair. Also note that thinning shears should only be used on dry hair. Damp or wet hair tends to clump up, which can result in the removal of too much hair.

If in Doubt...

If you're in doubt as to whether or not thinning shears are the best option for your hair type and style, talk to your hairdresser. He or she will be able to make a recommendation as to whether you should try shears or a layered style to achieve your ideal look.
